About Geographic Information System (GIS)

The Durham County Record Office 'maps' section uses an interactive technology known as Geographic Information System (GIS) to allow you to interact with both modern and historical maps of County Durham and the immediate surrounding areas.

Please click on the button below to launch the GIS, or use the link above to find out more about specific map layers. Note that a new browser window will be opened by the GIS: to return to this page, please close the new window.

Launch the GIS now!

Should you require assistance using this system, please refer to our online help pages or contact the GIS Team for specialist advice. To assist you in understanding the technical jargon associated with the GIS we have compiled a glossary of GIS terms and provided an explanation of the 'Map Tools' and their functions.

System Requirements

Please note that the GIS is available only to PC users with Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, or Netscape 4.8 or later. In addition, your screen resolution is required to be set to 800 x 600 or greater. Please note that the GIS may take several seconds to download when used over a standard internet connection. Finally, in order to print the maps produced by the system your browser software must be capable of opening 'pop up' windows.

Please note that maps which are part of the GIS have been reproduced from Ordnance Survey material with the permission of Ordnance Survey on behalf of the Controller of Her Majesty's Stationery Office. Crown Copyright Durham County Council 100019779 2004.
