The following pages allow you to find out which Church of England parish a settlement was in at any given date. Links from this section take you straight to detailed pages of parish register information for each parish in the county.
If you know the place (which is not necessarily a parish) where one of your County Durham ancestors was baptised, married or buried but you don't know which which parish that place was in, follow these simple instructions to discover the answer.
Find the place that you are interested in, for example, Allensford, in the following pages (use the alphabetical list at the top of the page to go quickly to the entry you want) and then click on the blue arrow next to the place name in the index. The entry expands to show which parish(es) that place was in: For example, Allensford was in Lanchester, All Saints before 1864 and Castleside St. John after 1864. Click on the parish name (Lanchester All Saints or Castleside St. John) to go straight to the detailed parish information pages.
