I would like to thank you for your site. It has helped me in researching my family both with certificates and the book "A Dictionary of County Durham Place-Names" which has helped me translate some of the writing in the census.
My Great Grandfather was accidentally killed on the North Eastern Railway in 1894, ar the Coroner's Inquest records from this time available and if so can the be accessed by internet, mail or phone.

A great site and a long belated thanks to the Registrar at Bishop Auckland office on September 15, 1978. I had opportunity to visit birthplace of my grandad and great-granddad (Crook) and went to Bishop Auckland office and help received was really above and beyond that expect - thanks to Mr. James (I think James) Pickens. If you are still there, Sir, my thanks! Tom Thirkell

They include William Wholah a shoemaker in bridge street in the 1840/60s. A daughter Nancy Wholah Walton who lived at 18 Chapel Row aged 76 in 1901. Also another daughter a Sarah Wholah Hutchinson who had a son William Wholah Hutchinson in 1853. Their brother John Wholah came to Australia .

I'm interested to know more about the street names of Murton, Co Durham. Particularly Farmer Street. Who was Mr (Or Mrs!) Farmer and what did they do that so impressed DCC that they named a street after them.

Web Administrator: Hi Valerie, Unfortunately, the County Council doesn't actually name streets - that duty falls to the District Councils. Contact information for the District Council websites can be found at - http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/Government+-+What+is+Local+Government.

1930/1940 two children called PARKIN of Cosford Park Horden died whilst playing by the cliffs at Horden beach.Believed to be Gordon and John. There is a strong chance that there were two other children as well but if so I have no details of them.Gorden and John were my half brother but they died many years before I was born so any help would be appreciated.I have traced some of my family to Rugby so it would be nice if this piece of family history could be solved. Many thanks.

Very plush and easy to use site.
Came across the site looking for information on road safety for children, which we will be doing a presentation on. Found the information very helpful

It is very fitting that your first test is against Zimbabwe, even though it is a sort of pariah state at the moment. Some of its nationals spent an enjoyable part of their lives at your colleges. The ones I can remember are:
St Chads
1 The Late Augustine ?Gus? V. M. Chikumira
2 Clement Mugadza
3 One fellow who I can?t seem to remember
New College, Durham
1 Damiano Vincent Chiuswa
2 Susan Chinhakwe
3 Elizabeth Mugadza
4 Mary Chivizhe
5 James Jenami
6 Samuel Tsatsi
7 Patrick Mandidi
8 Rodgers Masvina Hove
9 Bongani Ndwalaza Dube
10 Mufaro Majoni Hungwe
11 Stewart ?Chinya? Chiwanga
There are a lot of other guys I cannot remember as this was in the early 1980s. I have a list of others who were in the north-east. I would be very thankful if you can at least root for our team as sportsmen. Demonstrations aside I believe you are aware that this is a gentleman?s sport.
Also, as you watch the matches, spare a thought for the hungry and troubled people of Zimbabwe.
Anywhere Congratulations.
Regards
One of your students

It is many years since I visited the beautiful City of Durham, seeing this site beckons me back. I taught Aikido in the area in the 1960's, so if anyone remembers me?? visit my website: "British Aikido"...www.GeoCities.com/BritishAikido or email me. Remember Kenshiro Abbe sensei?? then read "British Aikido Board Controversy", that will bring back memories.Henry Ellis - Author: "Positive Aikido".

I am wondering if anyone has any interest in the LARNACH (all spellings) name in the UK. I am tracing the LARNACH family and would love to hear from anyone with any information that can help me.

My grandmother emigrated to Canada with her father prior to WW1. During WW2 my uncle visited an Uncle Bertie & Auntie Edith who still resided at Binchester Hall & the few pictures he took have the RCN stamp on the back. I know that the hall became a restaurant then a rest home & is now vacant. I suspect Edith may have been my greatgrandfathers sister but I'm not sure- the 1881 census showed an Edith Hutchinson as being 6 yrs old.
I know my grandmother attended Westholme Girls School- not from my memory but her own handwriting in a book about Brahms dated 1908.
I have almost figured out how to make a website (not all the pictures have loaded because I ran out of room & am still working on it). If you would like to see some early 1900's family pictures have a look at http://members.shaw.ca/casey.crawford/ & there is also a link to some old postcards that Edith sent my grandmother at the bottom- perhaps you may recognize a few of the places, I don't.
Living in Canada I don't have the ability to do much family research so I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might have some useful information- I do know that my grandmother had relatives that emigrated to Kenya but don't know if that was on her mother's or fathers side. I do know the names of 2 of her cousins tho- Philip & John Burns (brothers) but I'm not sure if it was Burns or Hutchinson that went to Kenya.
Trying to trace your roots isn't all that easy via the internet- everyone wants money for you to join before they will supply you with what little they have & I don't have the funds to waste on spec so I've done what I can by creating a family pictures & old postcards website

Up until 1955 I used to live at 5Newcastle Ave,Horden. My father was John Parkin who died in !952 at St Dunstans Hospital,Gateshead and my mother Betty died in 1955 which is when I left Horden.Within the last couple of days I have managed to trace a George Parkin who is my fathers son by his first marriage, and according to his daughter Jill there were relatives of George on his mothers side who lived in Horden called Twitchett. So can anyone help if so please feel free to e.mail me. Also can someone help me regarding my parents. I am trying to trace where and when they died exactly and if they were buried or creamated. To the best of my knowledge both their funerals took place in Horden. I appreciate that this is a strange request but I now know know that my mother sent me to relatives prior to my fathers death and when my mother died I was so upset I couldnt go to the funeral.
Thanks for a great site it is something to be proud of.
