Hopefully this great tragedy will make the governments of the world unite and see that it is people not politics that matter.

It feels as everyone in the world has been touched by this terrible tragedy.

My deepest sympathies go out to people who have lost family and friends. The not knowing must be heartbreaking for those loved ones still missing.

We can take hope in the miracle stories of those who survived against all the odds and be overwhelmed by the kindness people are showing in acts and donations that are making a real difference.

Lesley, Durham, England, 10/01/2005 13:52:14

Even a fortnight later the tragedy continues to unfold. I believe that there is hope in all of this - it is just hard to find. I am not a religious person but find myself praying for the helpless and bereaved. That this is an international issue is now beyond doubt, I hope it makes all governments realise that we are a global village. We need to relieve these countries of the vast burden of debt they carry - but this should be done in Africa as well, they too are one step away from national and international disaster.

What a terrible and heart wrenching disaster. We cannot imagine the horror of living through such a thing, it makes you stop and think of how lucky we all are! How terrifying and devistating it must be to lose loved ones in such a way.

This has been the saddest New Year I've ever known. The grief of so many who have lost loved-ones is beyond imagination. "My life flows on in endless song, above earth's lamentation," sings Songs Of Praise TV presenter Aled Jones in a hauntingly beautiful version of the old hymn, My Life Flows On. "No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that Rock I'm clinging. The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart - a fountain ever springing.". For centuries Christians have poured out, in words and music, the peace and joy of Christ that filled their souls, in spite of war and persecution, trial and tragedy. Some of our greatest hymns were written in times of extreme individual and national suffering. How was it that these hymn-writers were able to describe such profound inner calm in circumstances that would break most people's spirits?

I have seen the pictures, but still can't believe this tragedy has happened. I have family living in Indonesia who escaped the disater. So many lives lost is incomprehesible. All around the world should realise now we are a world community and stop the needless death of people of every colour and creed. As nature will take us as and when she chooses. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a friend or relative. THIS HAS AFFECTED THE WORLD.

Chrissy Goundry, Birmingham, England, 01/01/2005 01:02:12

My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this great tradgedy. It is encouraging to see that out of it perhaps some good can come if it stops the squabbles between the world's superpower and the UN, between the Tamil Tigers and Government of Sri Lanka etc. and gets everybody to act together for the common good of all.

The British people have shown their great generosity in giving to the appeal. Perhaps now is a good time for Durham County Council to become a truly enabling Council and to work in partnership with the people of the County to enable us all to do something practical to help the people affected by the tsunamis. It's happening in other parts of the country, why not here?

MikeK, Stanley, Durham, 31/12/2004 20:30:08

Our thoughts are with you all.

Stephen & Lynne McKinlay, Sunderland, 31/12/2004 09:50:43

the rich is not doing enough to help the tsunamis-hit countries. not just money-wise but also the technology-wise. God bless the survivors and pray for the dead people

faith, 30/12/2004 16:39:49

This is major human tragedy. This terrible natural disaster which affected more nine countries while shocked the whole world.Let's support the survivor and pray for the death. I think the US's pledge of 35m is too little.
