Title and Author: thirteenth tale by diane setterfield
Who would like this book: Those who enjoy a really good storey.
"Unputdownable", I found this debut novel to be rich in description yet certainly not too heavy. It leaves so much to your own imagination yet plays out an intelligent and fasinating tale which draws you in for hours at a time. In a timeless setting, an amature biographer is employed to work with a famous author. She unravels not only the old lady's past but her own and several others- all of which have surprising parallels. Can't wait for her next novel.deb, Barnard castle, 07/09/2008 21:12:40
Web Administrator: No title was supplied for this review - but I think it refers to Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale - in which case I couldn't agree more - this it the ultimate pageturner! Let me know if you think diffferently.
Title and Author: The Chronicles Of Johnny Wellies by The Mekinose Collectivw
Who would like this book: Chris Morris
This fantastic comic book tumbles through different points of view like Coupland's jPod on (even more) acid.
It is made by the creators of the amazing satirical website Supa Mekinose (www.freewebs.com/supamekinose) and a few others, and is a good read for fans of black comedy.Michael Judge, 23/12/2006 16:06:50
Web Administrator: I think this is a review of the Tom Strong graphic novels by Alan Moore?
Title and Author: Beautiful Child by Torey Hayden
Who would like this book: Fan of Torey Hayden - Adult Non-fiction
This is a true story about Venus Fox. She is an elective mute, and Torey is again challenged by her behaviour, but determined to help Venus. The story is not just about Venus, but also other students in the class. Reading this book, it makes you realise how lucky for the lives we lead, and how fortunate we are not to have suffered as the children of Torey Hayden's books do!! annette golightly, 23/10/2006 07:59:07
Title and Author: Ghost Child by Torey Hayden
Who would like this book: Adults
This is quite a traumatic true story about a six year old girl.I did almost at one stage consider not finishing the book. But am glad that I did, and you will too if you decide that you wish to read it.It is amazing what Torey (author & teacher) is able to deal with, and how she handles these unique situations she gets into it.Her sheer determination to 'help' these young children - cause without her who knows what would have happened to them!!I read this book within a day!It was unstoppable reading, but also quite harrowing!Annette Golightly, [email protected], 12/10/2006 15:56:43
Title and Author: My Family & Animals (The Corfu Trilogy) by Gerald Durrell
Who would like this book: Adult, young person.
This was a heartwarming read.A true story about a family who move to Corfu. And you learn about Corfu from a childs perspective, and enthusiasm for nature. It is very detailed about various animals, birds, insects the Gerry meets! He tells about the residents on the island, how friendly they are towards them.As this book starts from early 1900s. The author died in 1993. He was a conservationist and this is evident from the book that he would follow this trail. It is quite funny, as the family are quite a mixed bunch!! annette golightly, [email protected], 12/10/2006 15:51:33

Title and Author: Sold by Zana Mushen
Who would like this book: If you have read Mothers Grief - this is the sequel.
Zana's account of what happened when she was sold by her father into marriage (with her sister Nadia).Very hard hitting book, not easy to read, but I wasnt put off by this having read her mothers book. It highlights the plight of what happened to these two girls, and what still happens today.annette golightly, [email protected], 11/09/2006 14:09:22
Title and Author: A Mothers Grief by Mushen
Who would like this book: Like adult non-fiction.
This is a hard-hitting true story about two daughters being sold into marriage. Its addictive, and was unable to put the book down.It was hard to believe that this happens, and the way that these girls (and other women) lived in this country (Yemen).A strong, emotional, powerful book.Annette Golightly, [email protected], 11/09/2006 14:06:52

Title and Author: Pilgrim Snail - Busking from Canterbury to Santiago by Ben Nimmo
Who would like this book: Enjoys reading non-fiction.
This was a charity walk in aide of colleague who had been murdered. It tells of his trials, about the people he met, the isolation, but also the generosity of people. I found this book funny, quite sad, but the sheer determination of Ben to complete his task for his friend who had been murdered, strived him on to complete his task. I was sad when the book came to an end.Annette Golightly, [email protected], 11/09/2006 13:59:48
Title and Author: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
Who would like this book: Anyone with a sense of humour
Hilarious, ingenious and totally different. Part detective story and part fantasy and very addictive. There are 3 other titles in the series and you will want to read all of them - especially if you enjoy the great works of literature. Miss Haversham (Great Expectations) will never seem the same again.Dorothy Mason, 22/02/2005 11:08:12

Title and Author: Journey to Jo'burg by Beverley Naidoo
Who would like this book: Children who like shorter books and learning about other peoples lives
We all thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was serious and could make you cry if you're a crying sort of person. It taught us a lesson about racism. We would give it 8/10.Belmont Chatterbooks Reading Group, [email protected], durham, 15/11/2004 16:04:28
Title and Author: PS, I love you by Cecilia Aherne
Who would like this book: adults
This book had me close to tears so many times. It is really moving and you are desperate to know how Holly gets on with her life without Gerry. It is also great that Holly has bad times and is not always a really nice person, so she seems much more human than might have otherwise been the case. It makes you think just a little about how much you sometimes take loved ones for granted and how would you cope if they weren't there any more. Title and Author: Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

The book makes you realise how fragile our collective existence is.peter samsom, Northumberland, 02/11/2004 14:08:05
