Child In-Car Safety

Children are at great risk when travelling in cars unrestrained. Each year in County Durham, over 100 children are injured while travelling in cars.

Our regular campaigns are aimed at drivers, parents, grandparents and other who are responsible people, trying to make them all more aware of the dangers of carrying children unrestrained in cars.

Children have been killed and seriously injured even in stationary vehicles. You do not have to be moving at all to be thrown around inside, or even ejected from, a vehicle.

Carrying small babies and children on your lap is very dangerous. In a collison it is impossible to hold on to a child due to the weight factor described below.

Wrapping a seat belt around an adult and child will simply cause the child to be crushed between the adult and the seatbelt in a collision.

Did you know?

In a collision at 30 mph, an unrestrained child will continue forward at 30 mph and its weight will be multiplied by 20 times.

Don't take the risk!
