Introduction to Parent Partnership

County Durham Parent Partnership offers support to parents of children with special educational needs (SEN). Currently based at East Durham Education Centre, we operate on an outreach basis across the County.

The aim of the service is to enable parents to make informed decisions about their children's education. Parents are able to request the help of an Independent Parental Supporter through the parent partnership office, to help them to express their views, or to understand processes and procedures relating to their child's special educational needs. Parent Partnership staff undertake the recruitment, training and supervision of these volunteers.

Our staff promote the service countywide, providing information, when requested, to parents' groups, community groups, voluntary organisations and others with an interest in special education needs. A Newsletter entitled "What's Going On?" is distributed to schools each term and contains articles about what is available in the community and beyond, to children with SEN and their parents.

We produce leaflets containing information on a variety of educational topics which are distributed through the service (and can be downloaded directly from this site), including the SEN Audit. There are a variety of resources available on loan to parents to assist in understanding and supporting their child's special needs.

Information about ADHD is available from the ADHD Forum. The Forum aims to develop clear information and a network of support groups across the County.

Throughout County Durham there are Local Support Groups organised by Local Voluntary Sector, Local Carers Organisations and by Parent Partnership.

Parent Partnership staff are linked to a wide network of useful organisations throughout County Durham and may be a convenient 'signpost' for parents looking for practical support.
