Housebound Service

This service is dedicated to people who have mobility problems, cannot use their local library and have no-one able or willing to go for them. The Housebound Service assistants deliver books and audio book tapes direct to readers at home every three weeks and also answer information enquiries on a wide range of subjects from practical help to quiz questions.

One of the most satisfying aspects for our readers is the opportunity for a chat during the visit. From time to time we also arrange special events and projects: recent highlights include a visit to the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery for our readers' group.

In some parts of the county the WRVS deliver a Books on Wheels service from the local library. This service works in a very similar way to the Housebound Service. We recently held a celebration of this voluntary work .

Click here for to read some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Housebound services. Alternatively you can contact Denise Tyerman on 0191 3834224 or email: Library Housebound Service. You can also apply to join the service here by completing the form online, or printing one off and sending it to us by post.

Readers' project

We have had various reader projects. The first one ended in September 2000, with a visit to the recently refurbished Durham Light Infantry Museum. A group of Housebound readers met up to look at the museum, discuss the books they'd read and have tea and sticky buns.

We are currently running a Golden Dagger reading group. Clients are reading and reviewing Golden Dagger thrillers. Ultimately, we will bring them together to chat about the books.

Readers' project - update

Because so many people enjoyed the original project, we have other plans in the pipeline. We are trying to organise a wine tasting group. Clients would taste the wine and read books about the country it came from.
