How do I get the service?

What happens next?
When we receive your application, we will write and tell you when the librarian will visit you to discuss whether you are eligible to receive the service. You will be told within a few days if your application has been accepted.
How soon will I get the service?
There is a usually a waiting list, but we do try to provide the service as soon as possible.
How will I know when the first delivery of books is to come to me?
When we tell you that you will start to receive the service we will tell you the first date of delivery and the approximate time.
How much will it cost?
The service is absolutely
free.
How many books can I borrow?
You may borrow up to 10 books.
How often does the housebound service van call?
The van calls every three weeks.
Do I select my own books from the van?
No, the books are selected for you by the Housebound Readers' Assistant, and then delivered to you in your home. Unfortunately it is not possible to offer a choice of books, but we will try to bring you the kind of books you tell us you would like to read.
How do I reserve a book?
The Housebound Library Service provides a
free reservation system.
What else does the service provide?
We can provide a wide range of information leaflets. If you have any query or problem, we will try to supply that information or put you in touch with an agency that can help you. Just mention it to the assistant who brings the books to you.
What if I cannot see very well?
We have a wide selection of large print and normal print books. If you need them we can also provide a
limited selection of talking books.
What do I do if I move into residential/sheltered housing?
Many care establishments in Durham also receive a
Bookbus library service which calls on a regular basis. Please ask the Officer-in-charge or Warden about this service.
